April 11, 2011—
Malaina Poore's article, "Chicken Wing: A Patient’s Journey from Depression to Fulfillment" is published in the Journal of Participatory Medicine. Malaina tells the story of her youth, which was marked by debilitating depression, and how she now lives a fulfilling adult life, thanks to the strong support of well-chosen friends and her own determination to be happy. The author’s success in managing her condition has led her to a career as a mental health consumer advocate who promotes better public understanding of mental illness by encouraging consumers to speak up about their experiences.
March 28, 2011—
Heather Peck represented VOCAL at the Annual Meeting of Charlottesville's IMPACT (Interfaith Movement Promoting Action by Congregations Together). The group focuses on addressing the needs of those with mental health and substance abuse challenges, especially for those with low-incomes. Supporters say in the past the annual meeting has brought about a positive change in the community. Over 17,000 people attended the meeting on March 28, 2011. See Heather's interview here.
January 17, 2011—
VOCAL on the News! Rally Day on CBS 6. On Martin Luther King Day, Virginians dealing with mental illnesses gathered at the Capitol to advocate for civil rights of their own. As the 2011 General Assembly Session got underway, advocates wanted to make sure they are on the legislative agenda.
