Where in your community can you turn for support and help when you or a loved one need it? Ready to get involved with local advocacy and want to know who to contact?
VOCAL’s office is happy to provide referral to local resources when you call during office hours (Monday – Friday 10a -4p) at 804-343-1777. Please note, we do not provide direct services or crisis support, but are glad to connect you to resources.
Our partner, Mental Health America of Virginia (MHAV), offers a Warm Line that you can call when you could use some connection with a peer. The Warm Line is open Monday to Friday, 9am til 5pm at 866-400-MHAV (6428).
Virginia’s Peer-Run Programs
Many people experiencing states commonly referred to as mental illness find support at peer-run programs. These are community based organizations staffed by and for peers at no charge — no diagnosis or insurance required. Some programs promote arts events, some offer WRAP and recovery groups, and some offer employment services. Find a Peer-Run Program near you.
The state of Virginia provides mental health and substance use services through Community Service Boards, or CSBs. These are divided up into seven Partnership Planning Regions (see map at the left).
Peers are encouraged not only to seek support through the publicly funded mental health system in your area — you’re also encouraged to represent the peer voice and recovery interests to the leadership.
Find your Region on the map to the left or using the list of counties below. Then visit that region’s page to learn when CSB board and advisory meetings are scheduled and how to be a voice for peers and recovery. For Advocacy tips, visit the Speak Up! section of our webpage.
