We created this page for peers working with homelessness and those facing homelessness. As with all of the resources page on this site, we have tried to bring together the most helpful, up-to-date information in an organized fashion. This section is split into three sections: Advocacy, Education and Policy Change, Housing and Home Ownership, and Food, Shelter and Crisis Support.

Advocacy, Education and Policy Change

Virginia Housing Alliance Works to provide affordable housing options in Virginia by influencing and developing public policy, recognizing exemplary achievement, and providing education, training, and services.

National Alliance to End Homelessness The Alliance aims to end homelessness by improving policy, building capacity and educating the public.

Housing and Home Ownership

Virginia Supportive Housing VSH targets their services to people with the greatest need, including those who are chronically homeless, medically vulnerable or severely mentally ill. They currently have communities in Central Virginia, Hampton Roads and Charlottesville.

VIDA – Virginia Individual Development Accounts  Help for individuals saving for a down payment on a home, business equipment and inventory or post-secondary education tuition payments. $2 in match funds for every $1 the participant saves, up to $4,000 in match. Call 1-888-VIDA-WIN to find a local VIDA service provider near you.

VDHA  A self-supporting, not-for-profit organization to help Virginians attain quality, affordable housing. VHDA provides mortgages, primarily for first-time homebuyers. They have an excellent housing directory that can be searched by region, but the site is a little confusing to navigate. VOCAL staff will assist you if you call the office Monday – Thursday, 9AM-4PM.  Click here for the directory.

Social Services in most areas have a housing department although the waiting list for assistance is often long.

Food, Shelter and Crisis Support

Crisis Assistance Directory Emergency shelters with phone numbers for the entire state of Virginia.

Daily Planet VA Shelter, medical respite, health services including an outreach clinic.

Feeding America Listing of food banks searchable by zip code or state.

PATH Homeless Assistance Program Assistance to adults with serious mental illness who are experiencing homelessness or who are at risk of becoming homeless.  Depending on the resources of the local program, PATH may provide one-time financial assistance such as payment of one month’s rent to prevent eviction, assistance with first month’s rent or a security deposit to assist an individual.

Homeward – Project Homeless Connect Matches clients with volunteers in a one-of-a-kind partnership to assist chronically homeless adults connect to as many on-site services as possible in one day. This may include dedicated healthcare, dental and vision screenings, mental health interviews, case management, social security applications, identification services, employment resources (including for veterans), shelter and housing assessments, and much more.

Veterans Crisis Line The Veterans Crisis Line connects Veterans in crisis and their families and friends with qualified, caring Department of Veterans Affairs responders through a confidential toll-free hotline, online chat, or text.

Many religious organizations and other charitable groups provide hot meals. Please call the VOCAL office if you would like assistance in finding information in your area.
